The Associates: Four Capitalists Who Created California by Richard Rayner is a great book that covers the story of the Big 4 - Collis Huntington, Leland Stanford, Mark Hopkins and Charles Crocker - four merchants who came out of almost nowhere and ended up controlling the biggest railroad empire in America.
